The Breton Shirt – A Brief History

Like a little black dress or trench coat, a Breton Shirt is a timeless classic for your wardrobe.  But who knew there was such history and symbolism behind it.

While now synonymous with Parisian fashion, the Breton Shirt was originally introduced as the uniform of the French Navy in 1858.  With 21 stripes, each representing one of Napolean’s victories, the Breton Shirt was quickly adopted by seaman across Northern France for its distinctive pattern, which allowed seaman to be easily spotted in the water if they went overboard.   And as a result of it relaxed style and origins, it became popular with the workers of the Breton Social-National Workers Movement.

Fast forward to the early 1900s, when Coco Chanel introduced the design in her 1917 Nautical Collection and the rest, as they say, is history.

Whether styled with a beret and cravat or skinny jeans and flats, the Breton Shirt has stood the test of time and is here to stay!

My Go To Outfit

For many years I didn’t own a pair of jeans.  I know?  How did I survive?

But now, I live in jeans.  They are the backbone of my wardrobe. I don’t actually know what I would do without them.  What the hell would I wear?!  They are perfect for the school run, date night or lazy Sundays, and with a quick change of accessories and shoes they can take you anywhere.

My favourite look (and it would appear the look I reach for at least four times a week) is jeans styled with a white top and some kick arse statement accessories.

What I really love about this look is it can be so cost effective.  Your jeans don’t need to be a $200 pair from 7forallmankind, they can be a $15 pair from Kmart which you have styled the crap out of, and no one would know!

Add your favourite heels and a necklace for nighttime, or ballet flats and studs for daytime; your style is only limited to your imagination.  Slip on a pair of aviators, add a dab of red lipstick and you can go from drap to fab in a matter of minutes!

Here is a little style inspiration for you if you still need some convincing.

Hello world!

Welcome to the first blog post of The Shabby Sisters.  Who is The Shabby Sister I hear you ask?  Well I am a wife to one and a mother to two and surrounded by the three loves of my life!

How did I get here on this blog page? I am not really sure. It is something I have wanted to do for so long, but have been terrified. Exactly what I am terrified of, I am not sure, but the things we fear the most are the things we should do right? So here I am.

What is this blog about? A little bit of this and a little bit of that, but mostly about style; yours and mine.

There are so many style blogs and Instagram feeds out there which I adore and devour, but the reality for me is my monthly style budget has a one at the beginning and two zeros at the end (on a good month), so I need to shop and style smart.

So follow me as we find and style budget friendly looks from the playground to the boardroom one outfit at a time!

A couple of random facts about me:

  • I just hit the big 40 and loved every minute of it. I might do it again next year.
  • My day starts with a strong cup of tea, followed by an espresso chaser!
  • I want to be friends with Carole from the Real Housewives of New York City.
  • I love a fringe but despise the maintenance it requires.
  • I get distracted easily!
  • I enjoy running. Well not the running part, but the part at the end when you can sit down and tell everyone you ‘just went for a run’.
  • After living in the UK for a couple of years, I bought home some excess baggage in the form of a husband who is a little bit Welsh, a little bit Irish, a little bit Spanish and a whole lot English.

Just one last thing;  if you are a stickler for spelling and grammar, this blog may not be for you.  I am a notoriously bad speller, however I promise you I will try my best.  I will check, double check, triple check, auto check, husband check and friend check, but it doesn’t mean it will be correct.
